Women Fuel Rise in Remittances From the Gulf

For the past decade, Mary Molina Ramos has lived outside her native Philippines, working abroad to support her family back home. She has been employed as a live-in housemaid in Dubai for the past three years, sending her entire monthly salary of about $400 back to the Philippines.


“It feels good to support my family; I miss them all the time, but I can do more for them here than if I am with them,” said Ms. Ramos, 39, who works for a family of four in Dubai. “I am so happy I will be able to send my daughter to university next year.”
